‘The Penske Project’ Commences December 2018
Pictured here is a donor, mid-year Corvette Coupe about to endure a complete, chassis off, bolt-by-bolt restoration as another Fabulous Corvette Race Car, The 1966 #6 Penske L88 Tanker.

“The Penske Project”  December 2018
By Walt Thurn
On October 31, 2018 Mr. Roger Penske was presented with the prestigious “Spirit of Competition Award” from the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum, honoring his accomplishments as a successful racing driver, race team owner and businessman.
Mr. Penske retired from being a fulltime racing driver in 1965 and formed Penske Racing that same year.  His first race as a team owner was at the 1966, 24 Hours of Daytona.  His car of choice was a Rally Red 1966 Corvette Coupe.

The older we get the friendlier we are to ourselves. This is perhaps a motivating factor for the Fabulous Team to build a long lost race car … Tony DeLorenzo’s, “Hot Commodity”… The Owens Corning #6 Corvette that raced in 1970 at Daytona.
There’s significant history behind the recreation of this vehicle, so fittingly George Haddad got up with Corvette race car driver and owner of the #7 Owens Corning race car, Jerry Thompson, who offered several choice tidbits of technical information relevant to authenticity.  Also, former Corvette race car driver, Cliff Gottlob, provided his take on component parts used in the day.
Fabulous Restorations is committed to the accurate preservation of this race Car and it is fundamental company priority to consult with essential people. Subsequently, Dave Miller, owner of a ’68 LT 2 built by Werner Meier, Tom Langdon and Gib Hufstader, persuaded George to speak with Werner for genuine, proper information concerning the #6.  And the build goes on!
The credentials of Corvette racing legends contribute enormous credibility as we demonstrate accuracy and a deep conviction to all race car restoration projects.
Many thanks to Registry of Corvette Race Cars owner, Jan Hyde, who helped provide historic information and photos.

The Fabulous Road to Performance

After 40 years of automotive restoration specializing in Corvettes we reminisce about an important GM engineer and marketing maven, Zora Duntov. Ever since January 1956 when he took a newly modified Corvette to Daytona Beach and racked up an average speed of 150 mph, Corvette was linked to racing, forever, and key to marketing the brand despite GM's AMA mandate that carmakers must not participate in racing.

Zora Duntov remained steadfast to his vision that Corvette owners had the right hardware if they wanted to race their Corvette. In the early years he created "Race Kits" for many Corvettes.

Achievement may be anonymous as many great things have been done by people you've never heard of, however Fabulous Restorations is fueled by Zora Duntov's dream and direction for the GM flagship, an unblemished example of true potential. Go in confidence with proper improvements, performance and uncompromising perfection. Let us create a hand-crafted Fabulous Corvette for you.

Within the pages of this website you'll see some important people who know our racing endeavors and they too share respect for Zora's commitment to Corvette racing. However, our knowledge in building period correct race cars is only a fraction of this business.  Above all else, Fabulous Restorations is dedicated to NCRS top-flight standards, and the rarest of rare cars that are being worked on in our shop.
